What is PAT testing?

PAT testing is a form of electrical testing that focuses on movable electrical appliances, as opposed to electrical installations. The ‘PAT’ stands for ‘portable appliance testing’. These appliances could be small items such as kettles or blenders, but could also be freezers or ovens. If the appliance can technically be moved, it can be PAT tested. PAT testing is particularly important for quite old or well-used appliances, to ensure they are still in good working order.

Fire safety and PAT testing

PAT testing is also relevant for fire safety. Electrical appliances are a vital part of everybody’s everyday lives, from toasters to microwaves. But where there is electricity, there is a risk of fire, however small. PAT testing helps ensure that electrical appliances are safe and not likely to cause a fire, or electric shock. Older appliances that might not be in such a great condition any more are the most important items to have tested, as they are more likely to break down or cause problems.

How does portable appliance testing work?

PAT testing should be carried out by a qualified professional who knows exactly what they’re doing. The testing can be carried visually, with a trained eye, or through slightly more advanced electrical testing. Since the point of PAT testing is to identify faulty electrical appliances, it goes without saying that there is an element of danger, as faulty electrical equipment can be dangerous itself. Because we have great deal of experience with PAT testing in London, we’re able to carry out PAT testing quickly and efficiently, giving you reassurance that the appliances in your home are safe to use.

Do you need PAT testing?

If you’re unsure whether you need PAT testing, there are a few factors for you to consider. First and foremost, if you have had an electrical appliance for a very long time, it is a good idea to get it tested. The same goes for appliances that have seen a lot of use over the years, as these are more likely to have the wear and tear that leads to faults. If you are a landlord, you have a responsibility under law to ensure appliances in any property you are renting out are safe, and this is where PAT testing comes in.
